Artist Notes:
First off, as a dancer, this was one of my favorite pieces to choreograph. I'm a sucker for smooth songs, and this choreo hit so many of the points I wanted to convey—syncopating to the lyrics while also catching those subtle beats in the background.
When I started this journey, I knew I had to paint this choreography instantly. The waves and lines flowed effortlessly in my mind, and the blues captured the calmness I felt in the piece.
NOW—what truly made this piece even more beautiful was the interaction I had with my students while teaching it. One student came up to me after class and said, "I'd love to film this, but I don't know how to freestyle or what to do at the end. Can you dance with me?"
As an instructor, my answer will always be HELL YES, I’ll dance with you! But I also told them: Just feel the music and let the grooves guide you. Don’t be scared—because I don’t know how to freestyle either, but I’ll always vibe with you. And the result? Pure joy. You don't have to be the best at what you do, just as long as you feel good doing it.
Beyond the choreography and the colors, this piece holds a deeper meaning for me. It represents freedom—the freedom I feel when I dance, when I move with my community, and when I let music shape both my body and emotions. My hope is that when you see this piece, you don’t just see paint. You feel the rhythm, the intention, and the passion that went into every brushstroke.
